Artscale: The scale of things

I've found quite a bit of reference images of Space Marine illustrations that i will use for the first part of the project. However, before i start i need to make sure that the scales are right. Outside of armour the height of  a Primaris and normal marine are 8.53 feet ( 260 cm) and 7.56 feet (230.45 cm) respectively. Some would quibble on these i'm sure, but they are the measurements i'm going to use.

1:56 scale

As i am using 1:56 as the scale to sculpt at this will make the two types of marines the followqing height (outside of armour):

  • Primaris = 46.5 mm
  • Marine - 41.2 mm

Theses sizes put the 1:56 scale standard marine as being taller than a GW Primaris, just. With the armour i'm sure this will push the models to being around 4-5 mm taller making them quite hefty models on the tabletop. The more i think about this "little" project the more i realise that there is going to be a lot more work to it which is both daunting and exciting in equal measure. The GW arms may well be to small for the model as well as the weapons looking dwarfed on it. This is something for future Howrith to deal with though as i need to focus on the job at hand.

It is probably best if i explain that i am writing this post as i do the project so if there is a sense of time passing in it, then that'll be why. I may talk about things from the same post in past present and future tenses so bear with me.

Sculpting the unarmoured Marine

That's right, i'm going to sculpt the unarmoured marine first so that when i sculpt the armour over it there will be the right kind of bulk that you'd expect from a genetically engineered fleshy tank of a quasi-human demigod. So... i'll sculpt the musculature on a 41 mm armature as well sculpting the details of the face.

Lets start with the outline shall we!

Sketch and armature ready to start.

Adding putty

I sketched the outline and then, using it as a guide, created the metal skeleton shape that will exist underneath the clay. It  took a while to get it to fit right and i had to do some modifications to the one you can see in the image above. I had made the legs a bit too long and in repositioning them i snapped off the tangs coming off the feet. I ended up having to re-solder the armature together which was a little fiddly.

The start of the armature.

Once i had it all fixed i started putting the clay on (i'm using Beesputty so i can leave it and come back to it when i need to without it curing) for the head, rib-cage and pelvic bone. I then fired it to make it firm and cut it back to shape.

The body takes shape.

Getting there

The basic shape of the marine has now been blocked out. I started to draw some details in, but they'll be covered and redone as i start to refine the shapes and proportions of the model. There is a lot of work to do and hopefully it won't be too long until i have something to show.

It doesn't look pretty right now, but it will start to soon and with a bit of arm lengthening and muscle bulking it'll start to look a bit more like you'd expect a Marine to look. For now though, that's it. I'll post the results of the sculpt as soon as i can, but it may be a while. I have a Dwarf Marine Judiciar to finish sculpting and an assault squad to put together too.

Catch you in the next update.
